A pure copper cable - Made in Germany
The great advantages of pure OFC (oxygen free copper) cables are their excellent electrical properties as well as the low line resistance.
Often, speaker cables are called "pure" copper cables, although they have only a very thin copper coating.
This mainly concerns the as "CCA copper" (Aluminum core with a thin copper coating) or "CCS copper" (Steel cable with a thin copper coating).
These cables have far worse transmission characteristics than OFC cables!
Different wire sizes, depending on requirements
In general, the longer the loudspeaker cable, the greater the loss of power, which is however only noticeable in the loudness of the signal at the loudspeaker end.
Since a power loss can be counteracted with an increase in the cable cross-section, it is useful to use cables with differentwire sizes, depending on the cable length (for example, a larger cross-section for the rear speakers of a surround installation).
With a length of 10m, the power losses are approximately:
- 0,75mm² cable: 5,25%
- 1,5mm² cable 3,13%
- 2,5mm² cable 1,63%
- 4mm² cable 1,00%
